Summary

High Times writer David Downs picked ten strains he came across in October. From the tropical-candy Pi-Chew and the zesty citrus of Bolinas to pungent "Burger" crosses and the long-known Maui Wowie, the list shows what America is enjoying right now.

The October edition of High Times' monthly strain column came out on October 22. It collects strains the writer encountered around the country in September and October, and it is not a sales ranking.

On the sweet, fruity side, Pi-Chew (Ronin Seeds, Z-Pie #14 x Zuyaqui) is described as tropical fruit taffy with a hint of gas. Dole Whip (bred by Exotic Genetix, grown by Rosin Tree Farms) brings pineapple, cream and cookies.

For citrus, Bolinas (Purple City Genetics, Orange 76 x Chimera Junky) is zesty and sweet, and Whitethorn Rose (Huckleberry Hill Farms) is described as grape, cherry and lemon with a tangy funk.

What stands out is the "Burger" line. Toad Burger (Toad Venom x Donnie Burger) and Hash Burger (Han Solo Hash Plant x Double Burger) both have Burger parents, and both are singled out for their pungent, punchy aroma.

There is room for older names too. Maui Wowie here comes from Humboldt Family Farms, grown from a cut brought back from Hawaii's Big Island in 2009, and is described as tropical, citrusy and spicy.

Our view

Strain trends are also trends in the language of aroma. Dessert-like sweetness and nose-hitting funk, two opposite tastes, sit side by side on the same list, which feels very much like America right now. New crosses next to a long-kept old cut also echo last issue's story from Saint Vincent.
