Summary

"GirlPlay", a photo show by Marzena Abrahamik, is on in Cincinnati, Ohio. The series looks at where women's rights and cannabis culture meet, through dreamlike scenes full of colour and light. It runs until November 14, and the artist gives a talk and tour on October 30.

The show is at BasketShop, a gallery in Cincinnati. It is part of FotoFocus Biennial 2026, a photography festival running across the city this autumn, and entry is free.

"GirlPlay" is a series of staged photographs of women spending time among plants and in domestic rooms. It was first shown as a solo exhibition in Chicago in 2017, with intimacy and friendship between women at its centre.

The exhibition text describes it as a response to the male-coded "stoner" stereotype, recasting cannabis as a site of women's agency, creativity and freedom. Nudity is treated not as vulnerability but as a sign of agency and care.

Works on view include "Cotton Mouth" and "Waves On High" (2016) and "Noon" (2014). The artist gives a talk and tour at 5 pm on October 30, and the festival's Cincinnati Spotlight Weekend runs from October 30 to November 1.

Our view

Cannabis photography often means product shots or documentary images. This work instead shows women's relationships and moments of ease in carefully composed, almost painterly frames. We wanted to share it as an attempt, from the side of art, to rethink how cannabis has been talked about.
