Glass galleries turn into night markets in Colorado and Arizona
Two American glass galleries are hosting evening events this autumn that bring together local makers and artists. Elev8 Glass Gallery in Colorado held its "Heady Halloween" on October 17, and Sunset Glass Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, plans a free night market with live glassblowing on October 24.
In the United States, some galleries show glass pipes and bongs as the work of individual artists. This autumn, a few of them are hosting evening events that go beyond shopping.
Elev8 Glass Gallery in Colorado Springs, Colorado, held "Heady Halloween" on the night of October 17. According to the gallery, it combined a glass showcase with local vendors, a costume contest, a silent auction and prize giveaways. "Heady" refers to handmade, artist-driven glass smoking pieces. The gallery also held a night under the same name in 2019, making it a recurring event.
Sunset Glass Gallery in Tucson, Arizona, plans its "Sunset Night Market" from early evening on October 24. Local artists, makers, musicians and food vendors gather, and the gallery hosts live glassblowing demonstrations. Entry is free, for ages 21 and over. The day before, the same gallery had a yoga class on its calendar.
Both galleries are places to show and sell work, and both are trying to become places where neighbours gather too. Watching glass take shape in a torch flame up close is something only spaces like these can offer.
Glass art meets people not only at big trade shows and in specialist magazines, but also in neighbourhood galleries like these. Places that sell the work are becoming places that connect makers with their city. It is the grassroots side of glass culture, and one we want to keep following.
